4. What's Moodle?

Moodle is an open source (free) Learning Content Management System that has gained an international reputation as a feature-rich and stable environment. Moodle provides a suite of online teaching tools that work together to deliver a cohesive online learning environment. However, unlike other learning management systems, Moodle’s open source origins mean that it can be freely downloaded, modified and distributed; and that it must continue to remain free according to the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Most importantly, the Moodle open source community is mature and well-established, with an active and growing membership of over half a million registered users speaking over 75 languages in 193 countries, Moodle is growing exponentially world wide. Currently there are 50,234 sites from 193 countries using Moodle. Of these sites, 366 host more than 10,000 users. One hundred and fifty-nine Moodle sites are registered in Canada. The design of Moodle is rooted in constructivism, which is an educational orientation that focuses on creating learning experiences, rather than just publishing and assessing the information that instructors think students need to know.
